Craniofacial surgery is surgery to repair a congenital defect in the skull. Problems that existed at birth, or damage to the soft tissues and bones of the head and neck. The procedure can take 4 to 14 hours. The pelvis (bone graft) can be removed from the pelvis, ribs, or skull to fill the space where the face and head bones have been moved. Craniofacial surgery is a branch of plastic and reconstructive surgery that specifically deals with the correction of facial and skull malformations. Surgical interventions with anatomical structures above the infra orbital margin are considered by some to be craniofacial, and surgical interventions below are considered maxillofacial. These comparisons often caused confusion and did not help to properly explain the field of craniofacial surgery. In some cases, the surgeon removes soft tissues and bones from parts of the body to restore head and face symmetry and normal appearance. In other cases, artificial materials such as cheek and jaw implants are used.
